The Spiritual Discipline of Whatever....

Ok - so now I am going to take this seriously?  Do you ever find yourself saying that about the discipline in your life, no matter what the area?  So very difficult.  So very frustrating.  So very worth it.

I believe I struggle sometimes with discipline not because I am somehow lazy or inherently flawed (although obviously I am).  But because I just fight against what's good for me in my own life.  You do to - you know it, admit it :)

I have made a correlation in my lack of discipline to my lack of success in spiritual terms and physical ones.  Interesting yet obvious, you might say.  How many times, however, do we keep coming back to the table of grace on these issues?  The truth is that we always find ourselves starting over.  Hitting the reset button through the grace of God in our lives.  If we think about that for a moment - that's awesome!  Now, don't get me wrong, I don't set out to fail in my disciplines and neither should you.  We do, though, find ourselves wanting and lacking in most of these areas don't we?

So here is my proposal.  That we do start over - everyday.  I think that if we can somehow view each moment as self contained when it comes to our disciplines we will see our way to practicing more clearly.  The redundancy of it all will slide away with the ebb and flow of each day as each day has it's own pace and schedule.  Basically what I am saying is this:  if each moment is precious to us, then we take nothing for granted.  We learned to play this way as a child.  As a matter of fact, we learn to do everything this way.  Think about a child taking their first steps.  You would never hear them say "Man, I have to do this again tomorrow - this sucks".  Instead we instinctively see "some" areas of our lives as necessary.  We somehow know that we have to take "steps" everyday in order to be "walking".  The amazing thing is we do it without even thinking about it.  Amazing!  Can we apply that same thought process to the rest of our lives when it comes to learning a discipline, practicing a discipline?  I think we can.  And so, "Heaven belongs to a child".
